About Medsin

What’s Medsin?
Medsin is a network of healthcare students who raise awareness of and take action on humanitarian and global health issues at a local, national and international level. We encourage students to get involved with projects and campaigns that they feel are important or under-represented at university and that relate to health issues such as refugees, homeless ness or HIV. Formed in 1997, Medsin is a network of motivated healthcare students active in curriculum issues, community projects, international exchanges, campaigns and conferences.
Medsin and the IFMSA (www.ifmsa.org)
Medsin is the UK branch of the IFMSA (International Federation of Medical Students Association). The IFMSA was formed in 1951 with the purpose of exchanging students between countries. Over time, it spread to encompass more countries. Currently there are 91 countries involved and the IFMSA is recognized as an official partner of the World Health Organisation. The students’ activities are organised into six standing committees: Professional Exchanges; Reproductive health and HIV/AIDS; Refugees and Peace; Public Health; Medical Education; Research Exchanges.
Structure
Medsin has local branches in most of the UK medical schools. We share our resources and enthusiasm to help each other with the setting up and running of projects and campaigns. Each local branch has a committee who bring together the projects happening in their university and provide the link to the national committee. The National Committee works to ensure the network is serving the needs of the local branches. Its overall role involves
- Coordination - Sharing ideas and information effectively through newsletters, website and regular contact
- Empowerment – Enabling students to put their ideas into action. The National Committee facilitates the exchange of resources and skills across the network. It is also responsible for organizing training opportunities that help students to develop their personal and professional skills
- Support - Using our experience and central position to give advice and support to branches and projects
- Representation – Maintaining relationship with the IFMSA and other partner organisations and developing new contacts
