UoB Taekwondo in 2011/12

22nd June 2011

Dear all, this year has been a great success for the club and I would like to wish you all an enjoyable summer vacation. I would like to thank the outgoing committee for all of their hard work and wish those graduating the best of luck in the real world! In particular I think we are all very grateful for the effort put in by Sarah into making this year a success.

Plans are already underway to make next year an even better experience for Bristol's kicking enthusiasts. If you are currently viewing the site as someone who will be starting at Bristol in September, please get in touch if you have any queries! In order to gauge how we can make UoB Taekwondo as tailored as possible to members' needs next year, it would be great if you could spare the time to fill in this very short survey.

UoB TKD featured in the Epigram

7th April 2011

Our performance at the Nationals has been featured in the Epigram student newspaper:

Bristol University Taekwondo club competed in the 25th British Student Taekwondo Federation National Competition. The competition, held in Aylesbury at the Stoke Mandeville Paralympic Stadium, had Universities all over the country, including UWE, competing for the number one spot.

Bristol took seven fighters to compete in Kyorugi and two competitors for Poomsae, also known as Patterns (set sequence of movements that consists of the various fundamental stances, blocks, punches and kicks ).The team, although smaller in number than their fellow competitors, were in full fighting spirit and came home sporting seven medals, two of which were gold.

Sarah Quigley, team captain and gold medallist in the competition, thought the team “performed incredibly well”, particularly as two members of the club, Alex Pate and Duncan Bambridge, won gold and silver medals respectively despite having carried over injuries from the first round.

The overall winners of the competition were a “deserving” Southampton University, while UWE achieved second place. Although our supposed rivals in University sport, the Bristol team were glad to see UWE do well “because of a history of friendship between the clubs”.

For several members of the Bristol team, this was their first time fighting in a Taekwondo competition. Novice fighter Peter Duckworth showed particular promise. His “great speed and agility” during the fight resulted in him returning to Bristol with a bronze medal. According to Sarah, Peter’s efforts “showcased what UoB Taekwondo is all about”. Peter commented on the general success of the day and particularly enjoyed the “exhilaration during the fight where you were just focused on the opponent and everything else faded into the background”.

BSTF National Competition
27th January 2011

The competition will take place on Sunday the 6th of March in Aylesbury. We normally leave on the Saturday in the afternoon and arrive for weigh in in the evening followed by a hearty dinner!!We will stay in accommodation onsite, with both Poomsae and Kyorugi competitions taking place on the Sunday and normally return to Bristol late Sunday evening.

The price is yet to be confirmed but will realistically be in the region of £20; transport will be provided.

Its a really good laugh and the BSTF competition has an incredibly friendly atmosphere so it would be great to have as many competitors as possible representing Bristol. If you are interested please let Sarah know A.S.A.P so I she can book us beds for the night. Also please state whether you need a space on the bus!!

I will confirm the cost of the competition as soon as possible.
