Introduction

The conference consisted of a series of hour-long panels on different topics with four Speakers and a Chair. The aim of the conference was to be forward looking rather than only reminiscing about the past. Speakers were asked to talk for no longer than 10 minutes each and to spend not more than five minutes setting the scene and talking about the past and Peter Townsend’s work. They were asked to spend at least five minutes talking about what still needs to be done (both academically and politically) and how this can be achieved. Each session had 10 to 15 minutes for discussion.
