Indoor Div2 Nationals 2010-2011, Wolverhampton After finishing 4th at Regionals - highest seed for Div2, we started Nationals seeded 3rd and had to fight to keep it from some tough opponents in our pool; Roehampton, Leicester and Liverpool. The first game against Roehampton proved tougher than expected with us starting very slowly and being shocked into action, eventually winning 7-4, while Liverpool beat Leicester. The next group game against a stonger team - Leicester Jesters - punished us for the mistakes we had got away with in the previous game as they edged it 5-4. In the other group game, Liverpool beat Roehampton which meant if we and Leicester both won our last game there would be a three way tie for first... The feeling of underachievement after the opening games stirred us into action for our last pool game, against Liverpool (Boogie Kinghts). Aided by our much improved play we came through 7-3, satisfied with our performance for the first time of the weekend. This convincing win and Jesters drawing with Roehampton meant that there was no three way tie, but instead we finished level on points with Liverpool and went through as top of our group on points difference alone! This win also proved crucial as the next stage of the competition was a 'Power Pool', basically meaning that we went into another group with Liverpool, where our win was counted as the game between us. Our last game on Saturday was against our Regional rivals Uriel 2 (Exeter), once again their zone was very effective and the score was kept low. Unusually for Ultimate the game ended in a draw... 3-3. Meaning that we needed to win our last 'Power Pool' game to progress as group winners and first seeds. First game Sunday was against Newcastle (Too Many Pies) and we knew what we had to do. Unforced errors by them led us into a 6-0 lead, when we took our foot off the gas and let them back into the game making the finale much tighter than it should have been. But we held on for an 8-4 vctory that was enough to keep us top of the group. Next game, the 1v8, was against Leicester again and unlike Saturday we were prepared for them. We came out hard and maybe surprised them a little with some clinical scoring - something we had struggled with on Day 1. Some brilliant knives by Leo and an interesting interpretation of 'keep-disc' by Rob (resulting in a pitch length huck!) led us to an 8-6 win and retention of 1st place. The 1v4 was up next for a place in the final, and for the thrid time this indoor season we had to play Uriel 2. Both teams knew what would be coming from the other and had had enough time to come up with some ideas. Luckily, we finally managed to break their zone down with some clinical knife play, prevailing 7-3 to make the final. Against Cardiff. After watching Uriel 2 win the 3v4, resulting in the three South West teams finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd, it was our turn in the 1v2. Knowing full well what to expect from No Frills we went into the game exctited (and nervous). The first few points flashed by, the highlight being Freddie's layout grab from a Leo knife (what else?!). Before we knew it, it was 3-3 and we were holding our own. They stepped up a gear with some huge bids on D and suddenly we were 7-4 down with only 3 minutes left. A late rally - with some layout D bids of our own - brought us back into contention and we were on the up, but the final whistle put a halt to our charge as we fell just short, losing 7-6. It could have been a really dissapointing end to the weekend, but finishing 2nd was more than we had hoped for and we came away pleased at our overall performance. There's always next year.
