The aims of this society are:
- To act as an organisation within the University of Bristol Union in accordance with the rules and regulations laid down by the university.
- To promote awareness of refugee issues throughout the world both to fellow students and the general public.
- To support those organisations that work to protect and assist refugees and to promote durable solutions to the problems they face.
- To provide relevant information on refugee issues via leaflets, posters, guest speakers and the society's own publicity campaigns.
- To campaign on relevant refugee issues and to promote the rights of refugees.
- To establish a special link with a refugee camp and / or a local refugee community project. If possible (depending on the groups geographical position) to offer practical support to refugees in the local community through befriending / teaching English schemes.
- To encourage and foster academic research and debate on refugee and human rights issues.
Statement of intent:
Star aims to give students the opportunity to be part of an innovative and practical organisation, offering them a forum to learn about refugee issues and to work directly with refugees.
- Promote awareness of refugee issues.
- Support refugees in a practical way in the local and international community.
- Campaign for refugee rights.
STAR is independent and has no religious or political affiliations.
Started by students in 1994, STAR is a rapidly expanding student network. Each STAR group sets up a community initiative or works with an existing local refugee project. STAR has a national conference where members come together to share ideas and participate in a wide range of workshops.
