PAGE UNDER CONSTRUCTION:    APOLOGIES TO NETSCAPE USERS...

Unfortunately Netscape does silly things to HTML tables. Please bear with me until I have a Netscape-ready version of this page. If you can, use Internet Explorer 4 or greater.

Welcome to the British Comedy Society Webpages. At the moment, only the Committee and Contact links on the left work. However, this page is up so that you can at least see that the Society exists and means business...

WE THINK THAT BRITISH COMEDY is some of the best around. American comedy is on the whole very simplistic, based mainly around sheer gags about situations, without much (if any) character development. This isn't to say that American comedy isn't funny a lot of the time, but very little of it lives up to even the more mainstream parts of British comedy. There are many people who would say that Friends, Frasier, Seinfeld et al are much funnier than the stuff we have over here, and in a few cases they're right. But ask yourself this: why, if these programs are so great, are they put out at generally non-primetime slots on the minor TV channels?

SO WHAT COMEDY ARE WE IN TO at the British Comedy Society here at Bristol University? Well, for the last two years we've actually been called Bewilderebeeste, and dedicated to all things Monty Python. We have a very extensive set of Python videos already (including the "lost" German episodes), along with the complete "Fawlty Towers" boxed set. At the last AGM of the society, when we evolved into the British Comedy Society, we decided to give priority to buying videos of such classics as "Ripping Yarns", "The Young Ones", "Ab Fab", Eddie Izzard, Ben Elton, "Black Adder", "Red Dwarf", and many more in that vein.

WHAT DOES THE SOCIETY DO? Quite simply, for the 2 quid it costs to join (we're one of the cheapest societies), we show videos regularly throughout the year at the Students' Union (free entry for society members), and we also lend out any videos in our library completely free of charge: just a small returnable deposit is required. We buy the videos with funds from the membership fees, a grant from the Union itself, and the 50p entry charge made for non-members to come and watch the videos. We also have the occasional get-together, either in hall bars or going out to a good pub, and we also hope to arrange trips (and cheaper tickets) to Jester's Comedy Club (the premiere comedy club in the West, right on our doorstep here in Bristol), although we have yet to try actually doing this! In short, we're bloody good value for money...

SO, UNTIL THIS SITE IS COMPLETED, please sit back, relax, and enjoy the silly javascript rollover thingy buttons to your left. And come back soon if you're interested - this site should be mostly finished by about Monday 4th October.

We have dozens of videos - rent them for free!
