Since 2015 the Bristol Record Society has been making its past volumes
available electronically. This initially took the form of home-scanned pdfs,
which we placed on our own website. From 2020 we began producing
professionally scanned versions of the volumes, which are now hosted on The
Internet Archive (archive.org).
We shifted to this electronic repository because the files are more secure
and they are made available automatically in multiple formats.
The Bristol Record Society decided to make its past volumes accessible in
digital format to enable us to fulfil better our core function, which is to
make the records of Bristol's history available to as wide an audience as
possible. None of our editors has ever received any royalty or fee for
publishing with us - all having agreed to have their volumes published on a pro bono basis. Continuing
in this spirit, our volumes are distributed on a not-for-profit basis.
In addition to our main series, we also produce an Occasional
Publications series that is purely electronic, published on archive.org.
The occasional series is for work that is shorter and less developed, or less
thoroughly checked, proof-read and presented than would be expected of our
formal volumes. It is still subject to review by our editors, however, and is
considered to be of sufficient value and quality to be worth putting in the
public domain.
More information about the BRS’s ongoing Digitisation Initiative, can be
found on our Home Page. If you wish sponsor the
digitisation of an individual past volume or volumes, please contact Dr
Evan Jones, our General Editor (Digitisation). Sponsorship is set at £30
for our own volumes and will be recorded on this webpage.
Our volumes are typically made available online to the public five years
after the initial publication.
