  • Analysis of how hospitals respond to mergers and competition.
  • The authors create proxy measures for hospital quality, then estimate the average quality of consolidating hospitals before & after consolidation

Key results:

  • Preliminary results suggest an increase in quality following consolidation. Whether the increase is experienced by the acquired hospital or the purchaser depends on the quality measure.
