‘HMO Penetration, Competition, and Risk-Adjusted Hospital Mortality’

HSR 36(6 Pt 1): 1019-35

  • Assesses the HMO ‘spill-over’ effect – how does HMO penetration and competition affect the treatment quality of non-HMO patients?
  • Hospital competition (HHI-measured) is included as an explanatory variable, along with several other hospital characteristics.

Key results:

  • Hospital competition, as measured by the HHI, was not a significant determinant of excess mortality in any of the models estimated, and nor was HMO penetration.
