Areas of expertise I am interested in the process of evolution, in understanding the patterns that arise from it and how we can learn about the past from it. My current research focuses on genetics and how recombination effects Bacterial genotypes.

I'm also interested in the interaction between evolution and ecology. One important feature is the host that a bacteria can live in, which is controlled by ecological effects. This provides restrictions on which recombination can occur, and can tell us about possible future changes of host - a popular example (that I do not study) is whether "Bird Flu" can switch from its current bird hosts to affect humans.

I have also worked on the problem of inferring actual ecological interactions of bacteria living in the gut from simple experimental data, as well as inference of habitat specialization in Scots Pine.
