British history, especially economic history and political economy since the late nineteenth century. Recent books include The British economy since 1945 (Palgrave, 2000); (ed with RE Backhouse) Exemplary Economists (2 vols, Edward Elgar, 2000); and (with A. Ringe and N. Rollins) Economic policy under the Conservatives, 1951-64 (IHR/TNA, 2004); and articles on exchange rates and the balance of payments, 1949-72; economists and the growth consciousness of the 1950s and 1960s; and government and the economy, 1860-1939 (for the recently published Cambridge economic history of modern Britain, CUP, 2003).
