Areas of expertise |
My main research focus is the epidemiology, aetiology and pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes and related autoimmune conditions, with a particular emphasis on the prediction and prevention of type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes.
I have particular expertise in the application of autoantibodies to islet antigens in the prediction of type 1 diabetes, and have developed flexible strategies to identify individuals at high risk for development of type 1 diabetes. I have also been involved in international activities for the standardization of diabetes-related autoantibodies.
I play a leading role in trials to prevent type 1 diabetes, and lead the UK participation in the multinational network of type 1 diabetes prevention trials (Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet). I also have expertise in clinical aspects of diabetes, particularly type 1 diabetes
