Areas of expertise I studied Medicine in Cape Town graduating in 1991. In 1994 I emigrated to the UK and undertook postgraduate training as an Orthopaedic Surgeon in Bristol, being made a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1997, and receiving a Fellowship in Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery in 2003. I received a PhD in 2003 for work on artificial bone graft substitutes and a MD in 2006, for work on preventing wound infection in joint replacement surgery, both from the University of Bristol. In May 2007 I succeeded Professor Learmonth as Head of the Orthopaedic Group of the University of Bristol and in October 2007 I became the chairman of the North Bristol Trust Research Committee. My research interests include outcomes of arthroplasty, the safety of Orthopaedic implants and restitution of bone stock loss.
