We have a limited amount of space for students who are interested in getting a more intensive exposure to life in a research lab. We take students who want to spend 4-8 weeks with us over the summer vacation. Students are usually about to enter their final year and are keen to expand their practical experience.
We try and define one particular area that the student can focus on in the relatively short time available, and pair the student up with a researcher who is working on the same project. Generally this opportunity is available to one student per year.
Funding to pay a stipend to the student may be available for example through application to the Society of Biology for an Undergraduate Student Bursary; or to the Biochemical Society for a Summer Vacation Studentship. Successful application depends on a project agreed between the student and the supervisor. Applications need to be made between December and February.
We have also been successful in raising money from NERC (the National Eye Research Centre), for students whose projects are relevant to ocular disease.
This is what Andrew Johnson had to say about his time in the lab:
"It was fantastic to be part of Dr. Nicholson's lab group in the summer of 2006.
The willingness of all members to share their knowledge and discuss their work
made for an extremely vibrant and challenging environment. The experience of
being involved in such a successful academic group was massively beneficial for
my studies and convinced me to undertake a research degree in a closely related
field."
