Description including Unit Aims

This unit aims to inform the student of the basic concepts of electrical engineering. The unit will use a high level approach in order to highlight the diversity of disciplines, ranging from high power networks to micro-control systems, involved in electrical engineering. Although many of the fundamental concepts will be studied, the second year electrical engineering units will supply more of the detail and rigorous analysis. Teaching will be based on an applications approach where electrical equipment already familiar to the student will be used to illustrate the salient information. It is further intended that teaching will make extensive use of demonstrations.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Having completed this unit, the student will be able to:

  1. List the elements that comprise a typical electrical engineering system
  2. Describe the practical and theoretical operation of system elements
  3. Indicate everyday examples of the use of system elements
  4. Apply techniques such as drawing diagrams and making simple calculations to practical design and also examination situations

Teaching Information

Teaching will be delivered through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous sessions, including lectures, practical activities supported by drop-in sessions, problem sheets and self-directed exercises.

Assessment Information

Formative: Online Test 1&2

Summative: Exam (May/June) (100%)
