Description including Unit Aims

This unit aims to extend and further develop skills of independent reading and interpretation of literary texts in Latin. These texts will be studied from the perspective of their generic, thematic or historical inter-relations, as evidenced by close reading of texts, and by consideration of commentaries and secondary literature. Upon conclusion of this unit students will have developed knowledge of the issues raised in relation to the texts studied and their interpretation. They will have developed an appreciation of the literary style of the texts studied and improved their fluency in reading and translating of Latin.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit successful students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate skills in reading, translating and interpreting a Latin text and in evaluating translations of it, appropriate to language level D1
  2. show an understanding of current debates about the texts studied, and their historical and cultural significance;
  3. demonstrate skills in constructing coherent, relevant and sophisticated critical arguments, and in relating their readings of the texts to wider theoretical issues, as appropriate to level H/6;
  4. display skills in written communication appropriate to language level D1

Teaching Information

This unit will involve a combination of independent investigative activities, long- and short-form lectures, and discussion. Students will be expected to engage with materials and participate on a weekly basis. Feedback will be provided for both formative and summative assessments, and this will be supported by meetings with tutors.
