Description including Unit Aims

In this unit, students will undertake an advanced open-ended engineering project as a team, enabling them to develop conceptual and detailed solutions for an engineering project, utilising and extending their knowledge, understanding and skills acquired throughout the degree programme.

Students will organise their own work and integrate it with the overall activities of the team, as well as coordinate the overall direction of the team, and communicate their work through a group technical report and group presentation.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion, students will be able to:

  1. Plan and execute a project and work to a budget and carry out risk assessments related to the work
  2. Efficiently work in a team and collaborate to achieve a global goal
  3. Demonstrate self-direction and originality in tackling and solving engineering problems, and act autonomously in planning and implementing tasks
  4. Analyse a complicated engineering problem in the subject area of the project, synthesise a solution, evaluate and assess the proposed solution and defend it against scientific enquiry
  5. Write a structured technical report and communicate technical results to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Teaching Information

Each team is allocated an academic supervisor at the beginning of the year. He or she is responsible for advising the team and students on how they might progress with the project. The overall specification of the project is decided by the supervisor with input from the students. The students and the supervisor will discuss technical aspects and the supervisor will advise on project direction in regular meetings. The group research supervision meetings are complemented by a series of lectures and seminars.

Assessment Information

The Group Project will include a written report and presentation (produced by the team), followed by an individual viva. Leading to a single summative mark. The marking criteria will take account of performance in both parts. Fromative feedback will be provded during supervision meetings.

Other Pass Requirements':

In addition to achieving the minimum pass mark students must complete a stage gate assessment in order to be awarded credit points.

Resources

If this unit has a Resource List, you will normally find a link to it in the Blackboard area for the unit. Sometimes there will be a separate link for each weekly topic.

If you are unable to access a list through Blackboard, you can also find it via the Resource Lists homepage. Search for the list by the unit name or code (e.g. MENGM5000).

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

See the Faculty workload statement relating to this unit for more information.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
