Description including Unit Aims

An introduction to nonsymmetric loading of beams with open and closed cross-sections; analysis of thin-walled aircraft structures; 2D stress analysis and failure criteria; material structures, properties and processing, and introduction to principles of sustainable manufacture.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the unit the student will be able to:

  1. Analyse beams with arbitrary cross-sections (solid or thin-walled open/closed sections), arbitrary composition (homogeneous or composite) and arbitrary loading (on or off-axis);
  2. Analyse the torsion and bending of multicell light aircraft structures;
  3. Describe and evaluate common processing routes for materials and diagnose failures arising from inappropriate processing;
  4. Conduct basic life-cycle analyses on selected industrial scenarios.

Lectures, examples classes and laboratories.

Assessment Information

30% - Assessed Coursework on: (i) off-axis loading of composite beams (ILO1), (ii) torsion of multi-cell thin-walled aircraft structures (ILO2), and (iii) materials testing laboratory report (ILO3).

70% - 3 Hour examination in May/June, 5 mandatory questions (ILOs1-4).
