Description including Unit Aims

A substantial and original piece of research work of engineering or advanced composites relevance at master's level which may be wholly research or include aspects of novel advanced composites. Integral to this project are project management skills, communication skills, reasoning skills, originality and creativity in problem solving.

Scope exists for any sponsoring organisation to cooperate in the choice of a suitable project. Upon review and approval by the academic staff, individual research projects undertaken can be conducted in situ.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the unit, the students will be able to: - undertake an original research activity - plan and prepare a concise, written technical report in the format of an archive journal paper - orally present a technical subject, including handling questions and tailoring technical and specialist knowledge and information to a broader audience - adopt a high standard of record keeping and management of information.

Ongoing project supervision provided by project supervisor(s).

Assessment Information

Unit is assessed by means of an oral presentation (20%) and by the marking of the final dissertation by two independent academics (who are not involved with the project) 40% each.
