Description including Unit Aims

An introduction to the basic principles, tools, and skills required for engineering design and use of computers; principles and processes used in the design of aerospace vehicles; standards in presenting the general arrangement layouts of aerospace vehicle design concepts; consideration of design for manufacture and its effect on product cost and quality.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the unit the student will be able to: • interpret and present graphical information, including three-view 2D aircraft representations with associated principal dimensional/parametric data; • create 3D solid object models and engineering drawings using CAD; • demonstrate knowledge of basic design principles of aircraft; • use computer programming and spread-sheets for basic engineering tasks • apply basic knowledge and understanding of aerodynamics, dynamics and structures for the design of a model flight vehicle; manufacture, test and measure performance and produce documentation to clearly define the design and explain performance.
