This unit will run in parallel with Anatomical Science 1b (ANAT10102) as a sub-unit to provide anatomical background for an MSc course for postgraduate engineers. The purpose is to teach postgraduate engineers the basic anatomy of the circulatory, respiratory, and locomotor (bones, joints and muscles) systems. The unit will comprise lectures and practical laboratory sessions.
Upon completion of the unit, students will understand the gross systemic anatomy of: 1. the circulatory system - including the heart and great vessels, and the peripheral vascular system including arteries, veins and lymphatics. 2. the respiratory system - including the lungs and tracheo-bronchial tree and its vasculature. 3. the skeleton - including structure and function of the bones of the spine and limbs, and their joints 4. the muscle system - including major muscle groups contributing to locomotion by the limbs, ventilation of the lungs, and stability of the spine and trunk during locomotion.
Lectures and laboratory practicals in the dissecting labs.
A 1-hour written examination in the Summer exam period, and a 1-hour practical exam in the summer exam period.
