This module will enable clinical teaching and clinical experience of a variety of patient groups in a variety of integrated clinical settings. This will provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate competence in the range of duties permitted by the General Dental Council (GDC).
• Be competent at communication with patients, their families and cares, other members of the dental team and other health care professionals
• Have knowledge of working as part of the dental team in the GDS, PDS CDS and hospital environments
• Be competent at interpreting complex treatment plans incorporating periodontal dentistry
• Be competent at completing a wide range of procedures the remit of the Dental Hygienist including appropriate cross infection control and moisture control
• Be competent at managing fear and anxiety with behavioural techniques and empathise with patients in stressful situations
• Have an understanding of the pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods of managing the anxious patient
• Be competent at managing patients with special additional care need and have an understanding of the limitations of the Hygienist in this role
• Be competent at recognising active caries and providing preventative care in children
• Have knowledge of their role within general dentistry and the competency range of other members of the dental team
• Have knowledge in the provision of domiciliary dental care and the of the dental Hygienist within this environment
• Have knowledge of the dental acre of patients with physical or learning disabilities, mental health problems or who are medically compromised or terminally ill
• Have knowledge of managing patients from different social and ethnic backgrounds
• Be familiar with the work of other health care workers
• Be competent in instructing the patient on various methods of prevention of caries, including dietary advice, use of fluoride and plaque control
• Be competent to provide dental hygiene care for the older patient

Students are assessed formatively through observation and supervision of their clinical work on patients. They are graded and given feedback for each patient that they treat. Patients are available for treatment from the Dental Hospital and outreach placements.
Summative assessment for this unit is the final examination:
Adult Periodontal Case Presentation
Students will present an adult patient on whom they have carried out a course of periodontal treatment during their training. 30 minutes will be allowed for each presentation including discussion with the examiner regarding their case.
Written papers
The format for the written finals papers will follow that of the End of Year paper:
3 written papers each of 2 hours duration (30 minutes per question, all questions must be answered)
Together these papers will provide a maximum of 45% of the marks for finals.
Therefore the elements making up the final diploma are:
Three 2 hour written essay papers - 45% One project - 10% 1 adult case presentation - 45%
Students must pass each component. The pass mark for each component is 50%. The Diploma may be awarded with Distinction to candidates of special merit. These candidates must obtain a minimum of 75% in their end of first year examination and the Final Diploma in Dental Hygiene.
Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in any module at the first attempt shall not be eligible for the award of Distinction.
Failure to pass the final examination
Candidates who do not pass every element of the final examination will be required to re-sit relevant elements. In the absence of special circumstances if a candidate was to fail a second time they would be required to repeat the full examination or withdraw form the course.
