Description including Unit Aims

The aim of this unit is to enable students to learn the skills of managing a significant technical problem that may be loosely defined, and is without an obvious current solution.

Students are able to choose their research topic from a wide range of projects offered. The project is done by students working in pairs wherever possible. Work may involve theoretical, analytical, computational or experimental studies. Students may suggest a project of their own, subject to the agreement of the Department.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Undertaking a research project is a significant and wide-ranging activity and, as such, will contribute to a wide range of program learning outcomes (PLO), including those in category A Knowledge & understanding. The precise details will depend to some extent on the topic chosen.

On successful completion of the project, students will:

ULO 1. be able to explain the topic of their project; (PLO B6, C9)

ULO 2. have developed research skills and problem-solving abilities; (PLO B4-5, C2)

ULO 3. be competent in solving typical problems of a large project; (PLO B1-8)

ULO 4. have developed/reinforced their theoretical, analytical, computational and/or experimental skills through application (PLO A1-7)

ULO 5. have become more well-organised and self-motivated; (PLO B7-9, C6-8)

ULO 6. be competent at writing a full report on a technical subject; (PLO B2,6, C3-5,9)

ULO 7. have acquired and practised oral presentation skills. (PLO C9)
