Description including Unit Aims

This Unit of Teaching will be offered as an Optional Unit as part of a modular distance learning programme. The programme will allow students to build Certificate and Diploma or Masters level qualifications by combining optional 20 credit units.

The Surgical Skills Unit is a single element unit with the following general aims: -

To provide the students with the underpinning knowledge and clinical skills to carry out minor oral surgical procedures including removal of roots and removal of impacted wisdom teeth

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will obtain a knowledge and understanding of the following:

  • the sequence of events in the removal of retained roots
  • the indications and relative indications for wisdom tooth surgery
  • a safe method for removing a wisdom tooth
  • the controversies relating to prevention of injuries to adjacent nerves
  • the management of the complications of wisdom tooth surgery including:-
    • post surgical haemorrhage
    • dry socket
    • oroantral fistula with or without a tooth fragment within the antrum
    • fracture of the maxillary tuberosity and mandible,

The student will acquire the skills and attributes necessary for:

  • the removal of retained roots
  • the removal of wisdom teeth
  • the management of the complications of dentoalveolar surgery

Assessment Information

This Unit will have three summative assessments: -

1. Online assessment and MCQ (30%)

2. Final written examination (40%)

3. Assessment of performance in Clinical skills (30%)

Formative assessment

• Online activities will provide formative assessment

Summative assessment

• Online assignments (length 2 000 words) and MCQ papers will provide summative assessment and contribute 30% to the final Unit mark.

• A final written (multiple short answer and essay) examination of 1 hour’s duration will contribute 40% to the final Unit mark

• Assessment of performance in the clinical skills sessions will contribute 30% to the final Unit mark.
