This unit provide students with opportunities to acquire skills of designing composite products and their manufacturing processes. The lectures and practical sessions will provide comprehensive knowledge of design principles and intellectual property required for general product development processes as well as the core knowledge of composites processing, process simulations, manufacturing, tooling, computer-aided design, and conceptual design. They will also learn how to pitch their creative project ideas with sound technical details and how to write technical reports.
On successful completion of the unit, students will be able to:
1. Design a new composite product considering its functional requirements, and assess the intellectual property and the market potential.
2. Apply engineering judgement in selection of appropriate manufacturing methods, and assess and predict risk of defect occurrence in various processing solutions.
3. Analyse and model the basic manufacturing processes, and optimise process parameters through numerical simulations.
4. Build a digital mock-up model using a computer-aided design tool.
5. Produce a manufacturable product design and an efficient and cost-effective manufacturing plan considering design for manufacture.
Teaching will be delivered through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous sessions, which may include lectures, practical activities supported by drop-in sessions, problem sheets and self-directed exercises.
