Description including Unit Aims

The writing of a 11,000 word dissertation on a subject of the student's choice pertaining to the ancient world. Up to three hours' tuition will be given by a relevant member of staff, in the form of general advice, bibliographical information and discussion of structure.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students should:

  1. a deep understanding of a chosen subject
  2. enhanced their research skills through the production an extended piece of independent research in accordance with high scholarly standards
  3. developed proficiency in forming their own research questions
  4. further developed their skills of argumentation and communication
  5. have demonstrated that they can compile their own bibliography
  6. demonstrated the ability to work with both secondary and primary resources and to draw reasoned and considered conclusions from them

Individually pursued research, and up to three hours of individual consultation with the adviser(s).
