This Unit will explore the demographic, social and cultural changes that have taken place in recent years in rural contexts in Britain which have impacted on the role of the church in the countryside. Students will be given an in-depth understanding of the current needs of rural areas, including the crisis in farming, the challenge of affordable housing, the needs of young people, the priority of environmental protection, the difficulties of transport, and the break up of traditionally close-knit communities. Strategies of missional response will be considered and critiqued in the light of the Faith in the Countryside Report and new initiatives in ecclesiology. The distinctive contributions of non-conformist chapels in comparison to rural Anglican churches will be highlighted and explored. The elements of a Rural Theology will be outlined and critiqued. Examples of good practice will be explored through case studies and visiting practitioners.
