Unit Information

During this unit students will conduct a research-based project on a topic related to the field of cardiovascular medicine and/or perfusion science. Students can choose to do: a laboratory or clinical based ‘wet’ research project; a ‘dry’ literature, research proposal or data analysis project; or a ‘hybrid’ project (pilot data collection / analysis plus research proposal). This unit aims to teach students to design and conduct good quality research in the field of cardiovascular medicine and perfusion science. Candidates will be able to select a project topic offered from a range of potential projects or develop their own ideas.

Your learning on this unit

  • Undertake a literature search in their field of study within the areas of cardiovascular disease and perfusion science.
  • Design and undertake a research project (literature review, project proposal, data analysis, lab / clinical-based practical project or hybrid project.
  • Critically analyse research data
  • Present and discuss findings.

How you will learn

  • Tutorials
  • Self-directed study
  • Guidance from project supervisors
  • Practical techniques / data collection methodology in the case of experimental research projects

How you will be assessed

  • Project plan outline, contributing 5% to the unit.
  • Dissertation (7000 words), contributing 70% to the unit mark
  • Poster presentation, contributing 5% to the unit mark
  • Oral presentation and viva, contributing 20% to the unit mark

Resources

If this unit has a Resource List, you will normally find a link to it in the Blackboard area for the unit. Sometimes there will be a separate link for each weekly topic.

If you are unable to access a list through Blackboard, you can also find it via the Resource Lists homepage. Search for the list by the unit name or code (e.g. SOCSM0016).

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

See the Faculty workload statement relating to this unit for more information.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
