Description including Unit Aims

This module will involve the student attending clinical practice attachments for no less than 20 sessions. Clinical practice attachments will be at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, Bristol Dental Hospital and approved mentoring private practice(s). The student should observe implant surgery and the stages involved in the construction and placement of provisional and definitive prostheses. It is expected that each student will prepare and treatment plan no less than 2 patients for implant treatment. The student will be expected to carry out the implant placement on at least one patient and where possible final restoration for that patient under the supervision of their mentor. Each patient will be treated within the mentor's practice. The mentor will assess the competency of the student against agreed criteria. The student must submit a portfolio of the clinical practice attachment and written clinical case reports.

Intended Learning Outcomes

• To be competent at communicating with a patient and other members of the dental team. To be competent at maintaining fully accurate records and recording a patient history.
• To be competent at planning a single-tooth implant case.
• To be competent at planning an uncomplicated multiple implant case for a removable prosthesis.
• To be competent at recognising the need for bone augmentation. To be competent at obtaining a written consent to implant treatment.
• To be competent at the preparation of an implant site and the placement of an implant. To be competent in providing a patient with a single-tooth implant supported crown.
• To have a knowledge of the planning, construction and delivery to a patient of other fixed and removable implant supported prostheses.
• To have a knowledge of how a multidisciplinary case could be managed.
• To have a knowledge of how an ethical marketing strategy could be developed within their own practice.

Teaching Information

Lectures and small group teaching on study day 7 and 8. One to one teaching and observation of clinical practice.

Formative assessment

During the study day and clinical attachments via direct verbal feedback.

Summative Assessments

Written assignments: 1. Case presentations and logbook. Online case presentations of students’ own patient cases. Logbook of observed and treated cases.

Written and practical assignments are to be completed during weeks 1 to 42, in year 2 of the programme. Submission date will be given to students verbally and on Blackboard.
