This unit provides an opportunity for students to pursue a clearly defined specialist interest under the guidance of one of the academic team in TB2. Students could therefore explore topics in more depth than is offered within existing taught MA units. The Supervised Individual Study permits students to develop under supervision an expertise in an area which interests them, which can prepare them more fully for the dissertation, or which can broaden out their range of skills and expertise in advance of work for the doctorate.
1) To place students in direct contact with the current research interests of the academic tutor and to enable them to explore the issues surrounding the state of research in a field.
2) To develop students’ ability to work with primary sources relating to the field of study and produce a research-led essay based on such sources.
3) To develop students’ abilities to integrate primary source material into a wider historical and historiographical analysis.
4) To develop students’ ability to learn independently.
Normally 5 x 1-hour meetings with tutor. Where appropriate other forms of contact may be agreed with the student.
Please state the methods used for formative and summative assessment, including essay word length, length and type of exams, projects, etc. The relative contributions of the different summative assessments to the overall unit mark should also be included, e.g. 3-hour written exam (60%), 2000 word essay (40%).
