Technology is ubiquitous and is extensively used in educational settings and by learners to further their own, personalised learning. This unit will help participants to evaluate a variety of approaches, methods and digital tools with a view to enhancing their teaching/ learning. It will introduce key concepts in technology Enhanced Learning (TEL), taking a critical approach to the research in the context of educational theory and evidence-based teaching. It will also look at pragmatic issues and will require participants to implement digital tool(s) or strategies within their own teaching/learning.
As part of this unit, you will design and develop/partially develop a TEL intervention of you choice which will be the basis of your assignment. While some learners develop an idea during the course you may wish to come to the course with a challenge or teaching intervention for which TEL could play a useful role. The emphasis is on critical use of TEL rather than technical expertise.
The unit will appeal to those who already use TEL but also to anyone keen to embrace new developments to support their teaching and also their own learning. It will not include training in the use of digital tools.
Aims: This module aims to introduce learners to key concepts and practices relating to using technology to enhance teaching/learning within the health professions. It also aims to equip them to use technology enhanced learning in their own learning and teaching.
On completion of this unit, learners will be able to:
Blended learning, including using a variety of digital tools, online synchronous and asynchronous sessions as well as face to face study days. Study days and synchronous sessions will be based on best practice interactive teaching/ learning and may include:
There will be some pre-unit activities before the unit begins and in between teaching sessions. Participants are asked to bring their own devices (e.g. phones, tablets, laptops and chargers) to study days.
Formative: Peer and tutor feedback on tasks and critical readings and reflective journal kept throughout the unit.
Summative: The assignment consists of a presentation including demonstration and critique of your TEL intervention (duration 20 minutes plus questions), accompanied by a short, written reflection (1,000 words not including references)
If this unit has a Resource List, you will normally find a link to it in the Blackboard area for the unit. Sometimes there will be a separate link for each weekly topic.
If you are unable to access a list through Blackboard, you can also find it via the Resource Lists homepage. Search for the list by the unit name or code (e.g. MEEDM0032).
How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours
of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks,
independent learning and assessment activity.
See the Faculty workload statement relating to this unit for more information.
Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit.
The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an
assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates
within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
