Description including Unit Aims

Unit aims:

• To provide a comprehensive understanding of human fetal and newborn development and growth and the factors that influence normal and abnormal development of key body systems.
• To describe and demonstrate monitoring and screening methods of fetal abnormalities and the management of pregnancies with fetal abnormalities.
• To explore the course of normal pregnancy and birth and to describe the common complications associated with these processes.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit, students will be able to:

• explain the process of human fetal and newborn development and growth.

• describe factors that influence normal and abnormal human fetal and newborn development and growth.

• identify the routine clinical techniques employed for the measurement of fetal growth and for the identification of common malformations.

• describe the course of normal pregnancy and birth, and the common complications associated with these processes.

Coursework (contributing a total of 60% to the Unit):

• Essay (1 x 1500 words) 30%
• Practical Log Book (2 x tasks) 30%
• Formative MCQs not marked

End of Unit assessment (contributing a total of 40% to the Unit)

• A timed, open book end of unit written assessment.

How much time the unit requires

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
