This unit will explore the creative process of generating potential solutions to real-world problems helped by experts in enterprise and innovation. Students will research problems in groups and develop a range of potential solutions. They will critically evaluate the solutions and select the best for further development, ultimately selecting a single solution to pitch. The unit will develop students’ ability to work in groups and their creative and analytical abilities.
By the end of this unit you should be able to:
Students will be introduced to the concepts of innovation, idea generation and development. Teaching will be based around facilitated group work and workshops and will involve some discussion of leadership and how to work effectively in groups.
There will also be taught sessions about how to achieve and assess the wider impact of ideas on society. Students will maintain an individual portfolio of their work throughout the year. They will generate several potential solutions to a problem, these will be evaluated for strengths, weaknesses and risks as part of the first stage of the portfolio. As a result, students will refine the initial list of potential solutions to 3-4 that can be further researched and developed. At the end of the second stage, students will re-evaluate their solutions and evaluate the potential solutions of other groups. Using this feedback, groups will decide on one proposal to submit as a final proposal and pitch as a group presentation suitable for appropriate stakeholders.

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours
of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks,
independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit.
The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an
assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates
within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
