The dissertation unit is designed to allow students of the iBAMH to develop their research interests in a particular area of the medical humanities programme. Students will write a dissertation of 6,500-8,000 words (including quotations and notes, excluding bibliography), on a relevant subject of their own choice (for example in English, Philosophy, the History of Medicine, Medical Humanities per se, or any combination of those), which has been agreed by the Unit Director or equivalent person. Depending on the subject, additional supervision from a clinician may be available, or a relevant person outside the University. Students will meet with their adviser(s), for up to a total of three hours of consultation, which may involve advice on reading, preparing a plan of the work and writing up. The iBAMH Dissertation should demonstrate abilities to search and assimilate information from a variety of sources and produce a well-reasoned account in clear academic prose.
Aims:
Students will write a well-researched and well-reasoned dissertation of 6,500 to 8,000 words, written in clear academic prose, on a subject of their own choice (in English or Philosophy and History of Medicine or Philosophy of Science or any combination of these).
Students will have learned to consolidate or integrate their learning in the disciplines they have studies in other units of the programme, in a sustained piece of discursive (descriptive, argumentative and analytic) prose).
The dissertation will involve asynchronous and synchronous elements, including a programme of research and writing guidance, and one-to-one consultation and feedback from the designated supervisor. Students are expected to manage their time and pursue their independent research. Learning will be further supported through opportunities for peer dialogue and organised ‘writing retreats’.

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours
of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks,
independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit.
The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an
assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates
within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
