This unit will be used in exceptional circumstances for students who are unable to attend a unit due to unforseen circumstances or who wish to study an elective unit that is not scheduled to run during their planned period of registration. Students are able to select for supervised indepedent study one of the units offered on the taught Masters programme for which they are registered. Each student will follow a programme of independent study, submission of work and assessment. The Supervised Independent Study unit devised for these purposes will be consistent in its scope, aims and learning outcomes with the taught unit for which it is substituting.
Aims:
The unit devised for these purposes will be consistent with all aspects of the original unit outline. For example if the student is unable to attend the mandatory Qualitative unit and wishes to use the Supervised Independent Study route as a means to complete this unit a work programme will be developed that addresses all of the aims of that unit.
These will be consistent with the learning outcomes of the unit that the student wishes to complete through Supervised Independent Study.
The primary method of academic support will be provided by the programme director and the unit director.
Assessment is through the completion of a 3500-word essay. The essay should demonstrate that the student has met the learning outcomes for the specific unit being replaced.
To be negotiated according to the area of the Supervised Independent study. However the readings will draw on the key themes that underpin the programme. For example they will draw on themes covered in core text such as:
Becker S., Bryman A. (eds) (2004) Understanding research for policy and practice, Bristol: Policy Press.
Colebatch H. (2002) Policy. Buckingham: Open University Press.
