Description including Unit Aims

A week's field class during the Easter vacation, in which information and techniques learnt during the year are applied in practise in the field. Particular emphasis is placed upon integrating all three subject areas in a field setting. For example, we will visit, interpret, map and record lithologies likely to contain gold; explore fluid dynamics and sediment transport by panning in streams for detrital goldm investigate gold artifacts in museums and look for and record evidence of archaeological occupation of metal-bearing areas.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the unit you will be able to:

  • Describe, record and interpret a variety of sites, whilst assessing the interplay of geology and archaeology.
  • Separate out, identify and source ores.
  • Describe the geological history of emplacement of ores collected.
  • Assess the effectiveness of the cultural heritage management of at least two significant sites (e.g locations on the Roman Wall and in the North Pennine Orefield)

Assessment Information

50% of the end-of-unit mark will derive from the logbook, and 50% from the written interpretation of a chosen series of sites.
