Description including Unit Aims

This unit introduces students to basic electromagnetism including applications to simple circuits, the four laws of thermodynaics and matter at the level of atomic and nuclear systems. In addition students will aquire basic Physics laboratory techniques.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Perform calculations to determine the properties of simple electrical circuits. Sketch the magnetic field associated with simple configurations of magnets or current carrying conductors Apply basic knowledge of electricity and magnetism to understand the concepts behind practical instruments. Sketch and label a schematic diagram of an atom, explain the effects the four forces of nature have on the atom, and also explain the evidence for the existence of atoms and molecules Describe the different types of chemical bonding and phase changes State and apply Boyle's Law, the Ideal gas equation, and the four laws of thermodynamics Solve simple problems involving heat flow and transfer Describe the kinetic theory of gases and molecules. Perform simple calculations on transitions in atomic and nuclear systems Perform an experiment, taking accurate measurements and analysing the results including the errors inherent in the apparatus Write a formal report of a laboratory experiment

4 lectures and 1 tutorial each week for 12 weeks and 6 laboratory sessions

Formative Assessment:

Weekly problem sheets which are marked and discussed in tutorials.

Mark laboratory notebooks

Summative Assessment:

2 hour written exam (80%)

Laboratory mark (20%)

Passing the laboratory elements is a condition for passing the unit
