This unit focuses on literature of the Victorian period and the early decades of the twentieth century. Poets to be studied might include Tennyson, Browning, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Christina Rossetti, Clough, Hopkins, Hardy, Yeats, Eliot, Auden; prose writers might include the Brontës, Thackeray, Dickens, George Eliot, Hardy, James, Conrad, Ford, Lawrence, Joyce, Forster, Woolf, Bowen; dramatists might include Wilde or Shaw.
Aims:
The aim of this unit is to give students a grounding in Literature of the 19th and early 19th centuries; to give students an understanding of the distinctive qualities of literature of this period; and to give students an understanding of the distinctive qualities of some important writers of the period.
Learning objectives include the ability to develop and express, in lucid and correct prose, cogent arguments in essays; the ability to select and analyse pertinent passages from the literary text that would support such arguments; the ability to make intelligent use of secondary criticism and theoretical perspectives (where appropriate); mastery of the technical vocabulary and analytical tools of literary criticism and of the conventions of academic style and referencing.
4 1-hour Lectures, 1 1-hour tutorials, per week, plus 1-to-1 discussion in Consultation Hours, where desired.
2 summative essays of 3,000 words (50% each).
