This unit provide students with opportunities to acquire skills of designing composite products and their manufacturing processes. The lectures and practical sessions will provide comprehensive knowledge of design principles and intellectual property required for general product development processes as well as the core knowledge of composites processing, process simulations, manufacturing, tooling, computer-aided design, and conceptual design. They will also learn how to pitch their creative project ideas with sound technical details and how to write technical reports.
On successful completion of the unit, students will be able to:
The unit will comprise lectures, and computer labs. The computer lab sessions will be supported by Teaching Assistants to help the student to complete the tutorial materials.
Presentation (20%) – Each student will present their product development proposal that addresses the conceptual design, functional requirements, market potential, material selection, manufacturing methods, tooling design, and testing plan. They will learn effective technical communication skills as well as presentation and pitching skills. The presentation will be in 10 minutes with 5 minutes for questions. (ILOs 1, 2).
Product development plan report (80%, max. 20 pages including figures) – The technical depth of their product development proposals will be assessed in detail. The assessment will focus mainly on justification of their engineering decision making. (ILOs 1-4).
