Description including Unit Aims

This unit comprises two parts. In one part, two subjects are studied 1) power systems and the use of synchronous machines within those systems 2) advanced power supply design including all the main dc-dc topologies and control methods. In the other part, there is a study of reluctance and brushless DC machines, together with the power electronic circuits required to control them. This part includes a study of finite element techniques for use in machine design. This latter material is delivered by meas of a lecture and a computer-based laboratory exercise.

Intended Learning Outcomes

The unit gives the student a good understanding of how power flow is managed in a three phase system, including stability under transient conditions, calculation under fault and unbalanced conditions. Switched mode power supplies are studied in detail so that the student should be able to undertake the design of power supplies in all the main topologies. Operation of synchronous machines within power systems will be understood. Reluctance and brushless DC machines, together with the principle power electronic circuits required to control them, will be understood. The student will have an appreciation of the importance of finite element (FE) design techniques and the criteria to be addressed when selecting an FE programme.
