Description including Unit Aims

This module will involve the student attending clinical practice attachments for no less than 20 sessions. These will be at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, Bristol Dental Hospital and approved mentoring private practice(s). The student will observe and, after a suitable period of time as deemed by the mentor/tutor become involved in the assessing, treatment planning and preparation of patients for implant surgery. The student should observe implant surgery and the stages involved in the construction and placement of provisional and definitive prostheses. In due course it is expected that each student will prepare and treatment plan no less than 2 patients for implant treatment. At least one of these cases should be a single tooth replacement case. The student will be expected to carry out the implant placement and where possible final restoration for at least one patient under the supervision of their mentor.

Intended Learning Outcomes

• To be competent at communicating with a patient and other members of the dental team. To be competent at maintaining fully accurate records and recording a patient history.
• To be competent at planning a single-tooth implant case.
• To be competent at obtaining a written consent to implant treatment. To be competent at gowning and gloving for a surgical procedure.
• To be competent at placing patient drapes and preparing a patient for implant surgery. To be competent at the preparation of an implant site and the placement of an implant. To be competent in gaining flap closure and suturing.
• To be competent at giving a patient post operative advice following implant surgery. To be competent in providing a patient with a single-tooth implant supported crown.
• To have a knowledge of the planning, construction and delivery to a patient of other fixed and removable implant supported prostheses.

Teaching Information

Lectures and small group teaching on study day 1 and 2. One to one teaching and observation of clinical practice.

Formative assessment

During the study day and clinical attachments via direct verbal feedback.

Summative Assessments

Written assignments:

1. Case presentations and logbook. Case presentations of students’ own patient cases (1 per student). Logbook of observed and treated cases.

Written and practical assignments are to be completed during weeks 1 to 42 of the programme. Submission date will be given to students verbally and on Blackboard.
