Description including Unit Aims

This Unit of Teaching will be offered as an Optional Unit as part of a modular distance learning programme. The programme will allow students to build Certificate, Diploma or Masters level qualifications by combining optional 20 credit units. The Conscious Sedation 1 is a single element unit with the following general aims: a. To provide an introduction of the attitude, knowledge and skills required for the practice of conscious sedation in dentistry To enable the clinician to develop competence in the management of patients using inhalation sedation with nitrous oxide and oxygen, oral or transmucosal midazolam and intravenous midazolam sedation

Intended Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding: Students will be able to:-

  • Describe the underpinning core knowledge relevant to the practice of conscious sedation in dentistry including the relevant:-
    • Anatomy
    • Physiology
    • Clinical Pharmacology
  • Discuss and demonstrate the assessment and treatment planning of patients who require conscious sedation
  • Describe and explain the techniques of inhalation and intravenous sedation
  • Explain the clinical and electromechanical monitoring of patients treated with basic sedation techniques

Skills and attributes: Students will be able to:-

  • Complete the assessment and treatment planning of patients requiring conscious sedation
  • Administer conscious sedation using: inhalation sedation with nitrous oxide intravenous midazolam oral / transmucosal midazolam
  • Monitor a patient both clinically and electromechanically during conscious sedation
  • Assess and safely discharge patients who have received conscious sedation • Manage the complications of conscious sedation
  • Explain the importance of conscious sedation in the management of pain and anxiety in dentistry
  • Recognise the importance of communication skills in the management of patients requiring conscious sedation for dentistry
  • Demonstrate a critical and caring approach to the management of the anxious dental patient

Assessment Information

This Unit will have the following four components of summative assessment: - #Satisfactory completion of supervised clinical practice including Directly Observedof Procedure) DOP assessments (50%)

  1. A reflective case study (2 500 words) or online assignments (2 000 words) (10%)
  2. Assessment of the management of a simulated complication of conscious sedation (10%)*
  3. A final written examination comprising Multiple Short Answer and eAssessment questions of 2 hours’ duration (30%)

The clinical activity, reflective assignments and formative assessments will be recorded in an e portfolio. This will include the assessments 1 & 2above

This assessment is included as it is a professional requirement that dentists are required to be able to manage the complications of the drugs they administer
