The aim for the Child Health Research Project is to for students to put into practice the skills and theory they have learnt in the other 3 units to carry out and write up a research study in child health.
This will be a self-directed research block. There will be weekly supervisions by the project supervisor as well as the weekly group teaching sessions for Conducting and Writing Up Analyses unit.
Based on the principles of programme level assessment, this unit will be co-assessed with Conducting and Writing Up Analyses.
Formative: Mid-point seminar poster presentation with mini oral presentations to demonstrate their research progress to date. This will assess project chosen, ability to work in a team, research agility and problem solving as well as training students in producing a poster and delivering presentations.
Summative: Final submission of research paper and reflective note will assess LOs for this unit. These will assess project chosen, ability to work in a team, ability to deliver a project on time, problem solving, research agility if things go wrong, writing up (methods, introduction and discussion) and attention to detail. The research paper will be 90% of unit mark and the reflective note 10%. The data analysis presented in the paper will be excluded from this assessment, and will be assessed as part of Conducting and Writing up Analyses (see Conducting and Writing Up Analyses unit), but the interpretation of the results will be assessed in this unit. Clear marking criteria will be developed to ensure there is no double counting.
Both components of the research project are must pass (pass mark 40%).

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours
of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks,
independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit.
The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an
assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates
within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
