The unit is designed to encourage practising managers to reflect on two things: their experience on the programme as a whole as a way of integrating all the taught material, and the wealth of practical experience of managing that they bring to the classroom. It will do this through a number of structured exercises, readings, and discussions. The theoretical underpinning of the unit is Megginson&s important distinction between planned and emergent conceptions of management learning. It will also consider barriers to learning, drawing on the applied psychoanalytic theory of Argyris and Schn. Finally, it introduces students to the use of metaphors and narrative in organisational learning. It will develop Schn&s notion of reflective practice as a $reflective conversation with the situation&, and Mintzberg&s assertation that a key to management learning is $thoughtful reflection on experience in the light of conceptual ideas&.
