Description including Unit Aims
This unit will introduce the students to the assessment, interpretation and presentation of scientific information. The teaching will consist of three different types of sessions:
- i) selection, presentation and discussion of research papers (the first of these sessions will be given by the unit director to provide a basic model/ framework). Students will select papers of interest to present (6 sessions);
- ii) attendance at 5 research seminars offered by different Schools of the Faculties
- iii) a presentation of the students own research in the form of a background summary and progress update half-way through the project. Accounts of the paper presentations, seminars and their peer's research talks will be kept in the form of a reflective log (approximately 500 words/account) These sessions (12 in total) will provide valuable transferable skills.
The aims fo the unit are to:
- (i) Provide students with the skills to select, read, interpret and evaluate scientific literature.
- (ii) Provide students with the skills to develop their own scientific criteria through objective judgement, i.e. by assessing whether the hypothesis of the study was tested by the experimental design, and the results warrant its conclusions.
- (iii) Train students to present, defend and criticise scientific information in oral sessions for a specialised scientific audience.
- (iv) Train students to develop scientific writing skills.
Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of this unit the student should be able to:
- (i) Critically assess a scientific paper.
- (ii) Orally present the results of a study.
- (iii) Summarise the information provided in a research seminar.
- (iv) Write a scientific abstract.
- (v) Present their own research effectively.
Teaching Information
This unit is taught through: Tutorials; presentations and group discussions of scientific papers; attendance at, and summarising and evaluating, research seminars; and oral presentations of the students own research. The presentations are designed to stimulate group participation and generate scientific discussions.
Assessment Information
Students will be given feedback on their presentation skills and contribution to the discussions of scientific literature/ peer research (formative assessment). Summative assessment will be done at the end of the unit and will assess: overall presentation/discussion skills (50%) (this will assess learning outcomes (i), (ii) & (v); and their Research Club log book (50%) (this will assess learning outcomes (i), (iii) & (iv).
