Description including Unit Aims

This is a mandatory 20 cp unit of the 180 cp MRes programme in Condensed Matter Physics. It is one of the core lecture based units for the program. The unit focusses on material design and synthesis, device fabrication and physical characterisation. The unit will show how novel electronic materials can be fabricated in bulk and structured forms. The unit will also include a discussion of the physical properties of the materials, background theory and practical techniques. This unit will also give students a grounding in physical characterisation methods used in condensed matter research. Example of some of the areas covered are: semiconductor and oxide heterostructures, optical spectroscopy, scanning probe microscopy, diffraction, thermodynamic, magnetic and transport measurements.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the unit students be able to:

  • demonstrate a knowledge of the materials chemistry/physics related to the synthesis of crystalline materials.
  • demonstrate a knowledge of techniques, methods, physics used in the fabrication of structured materials and devices.
  • demonstrate a knowledge of physical characterisation methods used in condensed matter research (e.g. optical spectroscopy, STM, diffraction, thermodynamic, magnetic and transport).

Teaching Information

24 x 1 hour lectures with on-line support.

Assessment Information

Assessed open book course worksheets of problems and short essay questions (20 hours, 100%). Lecture course will be delivered by several lecturers each with their own course work.
