Description including Unit Aims

This Unit aims to explore the literary and cultural texts and politics of Lusophone Africa and Brazil with emphasise on the cultural exchanges between the two continents which contributed to their historical development. The Lusophone African legacy has had a major influence on Brazilian cultures and identity. The Unit will cover topics such as: history and language; creolization; colonial heritage; memory; health; cultures of gastronomy; religion; identity; resistance and music; and films. The Unit encourages students to find ways to engage with Lusophone African and Brazilian voices in a rapidly changing political, cultural, social, and ideological context by examining a variety of sources produced in the fields of literature, history, and cinema.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this unit students will have:

1) developed an advanced understanding of Africa’s past through a variety of texts from history, literature, film, art, and anthropology.

2) understood the conceptual and theoretical paradigms that have shaped the development of cultural and political exchange in Lusophone Africa and Brazil.

3) developed an understanding of the multiple ways the slave trade affected communities on all sides of the Lusophone Atlantic

4) developed the skills needed to present arguments clearly in writing and/or other formats appropriate to level H.

5) developed critical interpretations of the past appropriate to level H

Teaching Information

2 contact hours weekly, consisting of informal lectures and seminars and including presentations and discussions.

Assessment Information

1 x 3000 word essay (50%) and 1 x 2 hour exam (50%). This assessment will test ILOs 1-5
