Description including Unit Aims

This unit is only taught on the Diploma in Dental Hygiene.

Year 2

In the first term of year two, each student must complete a compulsory 4000 word written project and present the key findings. The project work must be completed and passed as sign up for the final Diploma examination.

The written project must be the students own work but is facilitated by a mentor/staff member. This unit is designed to develop abilities in management of own time/ resources and inspire professional research skills including an understanding of evidence base, analytical thought processes and development of a commitment to lifelong learning.

Aims:

The aim of this unit is to develop abilities in management of own time/ resources and inspire professional research skills, analytical thought processes and development of a commitment to lifelong learning.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • Effectively manage own time & resources.
  • Have knowledge of how to plan and carry out a project.
  • Be competent at accessing and interpreting literature relevant to their project.
  • Have knowledge and confidence to analyse and interpret the results of their study.
  • Develop and maintain professional knowledge and competence and demonstrate commitment to lifelong learning.

Research Techniques

Techniques are taught and developed to enable self-direct learning and complete a 4000 written project on a subject relating to the clinical practice of Dental Hygiene. Feedback and Tutorial support is given regularly.

Summative:

Enquiry & Self-Directed Based Learning

Completion of a 4000 written project on a subject relating to the clinical practice of Dental Hygiene. Feedback and Tutorial support is given, the project is a requirement as a sign up to finals and is presented by the student to their peer group and tutors. 100% of Unit assessment
