Description including Unit Aims
The unit covers the theoretical, practical and policy aspects of identifying, quantifying and mitigating flood risk. Themes covered will be: flood hydrology; statistics; hydraulics and modelling; coastal flood risk; flood defence; urban flooding; climate change; hazard and risk; policy and legal aspects; flood forecasting; groundwater; and water quality.
This unit will give students a theoretical and practical understanding of flood risk analysis and management.
Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, successful students will be able to
- understand probability and statistical concepts in flood risk analysis (PLO A1)
- carry out flood peak frequency analysis (PLO A1)
- know how to source flood information (PLO B2)
- understand regional frequency analysis (PLO A1, B2)
- estimate floods in ungauged catchments (PLO A1, B2)
- estimate areal rainfall (PLO A1, B2)
- understand rainfall runoff process (PLO A1, B2)
- estimate PMP/PMF (PLO A1, B2)
- understand flood risk mapping process (PLO B2)
- understand issues with real-time flood forecasting (PLO B1)
- understand coastal flooding (PLO A1)
- apply design principles for flood defence activities (PLO A2, B4, B5, B8) 13. be aware of the impact of climate change on flood risk (PLO B1, B2, B8)
