This unit comprises the project component of the Year in Industry, during which the students are directly involved in an approved research project in Industry supervised by a senior staff member of the external organisation and approved by the School of Physiology & Pharmacology, as appropriate. The student is a full-time employee of the sponsor company and is subject to the employers standard terms of employment, including all secrecy agreements agreed between the company and the University of Bristol. Students will be expected to undertake academic project planning and review tasks in line with company policy; these will be reviewed formally by the industrial supervisor and the academic tutor
By the end of the unit, students should have acquired a set of research skills commensurate with those expected by industry. In addition to laboratory skills, these will also include IT and scientific communication skills. By the end of the unit, the student is expected to critically review, consolidate and extend a systematic and coherent body of knowledge, utilising specialised skills acquired during the industrial project; to critically evaluate concepts and evidence from a range of sources; transfer and apply diagnostic and creative skills and exercise significant judgement in a range of situations; and accept accountability for determining and achieving personal and/or group outcomes. In addition, by the end of the unit students should display mastery of complex and specialised area of knowledge and skills related to their industrial experience, employing advanced technical skills to conduct research, accepting accountability for related decision making.
Guided and self-directed project work; research seminars; research group meetings and where appropriate, attendance at external professional conferences.
